New Release: Mami Wata
Mami Wata is the narration from a griot the story of a powerful African water deity that was captured and burned alive. Her powerful ancient magic allows her to resurrect and seek about her revenge on those that tried to bring her end. This song is a representation of Sierra Leonean, African folk tales. Sierra Leonean folks tales, usually fables and parables, revolved around the nature based elements and gods of the people. The story of Mami Wata is a respected though feared mermaid like being. Due to her tendency to drown people, she is feared; however, she is respected because most of her targets are individuals that are abusive to women and children.
Mami Wata, the song, is also a metaphor for the resilience of Sierra Leonean, African, and indigenous culture as a whole. Though the physical vessel of the people along with the native culture was burnt up alive, from the ashes rose an entirely evolved, powerfully magical beast that blends culture, shaping society, through wisdom of the past, awareness of the present, and an inspiration for the global future
Mami Wata is available on BandCamp, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, and most other streaming platforms. Lyrics, Vocals, and Production by Lioness-Sia, Instrumentation and Production by Woody Aplanalp.
Mami Wata
Ayaya yayaya yayaya yaya ye,
Mami Wata turned ashes and fire now Phoenix she’s ready to slay
And all those who tried to destroy her would have a hefty price to pay
For her revenge is great, her anger she’ll sate, this very day.
Ayaya yayaya yayaya yaya ye
Mami Wata turned ashes and fire now Phoenix she’s bringing the pain.
And all those who did not understand her magic would cower in vain
They’ll try to beg, they’ll try to pray, but they’ll be too late.
Ahah ahah ahah ahahah
Mami Wata is near
And justice will reign
They try to imprison a god that is ancient and now they will pay
Ahah ahah ahah ahahah
Mami Wata is here
And fire will rain
They thought they could erase her powerful magic but she’s back again.
